Hau! Hello! I am Carol Two Eagle. I am a mixed-blood Indian, of Santee (Mdewakantonan and Wakhpekute) and Lakota blood, with some Polish thrown in. For those who are politically correct – I’m not; I’m an Indian, not a “Native American”. I’m a Sun Dancer, with a very public prayer that was brought to me by Elders of 7 Nations that they asked me to Dance. This prayer is called The Four Winds or The Four Directions. It is a prayer to heal the Sacred Hoop of the world. Because I Dance this prayer, I am sometimes also called a Pipe Carrier. There have always been women Pipe Carriers, since we got the Holy Pipe long ago. A Woman brought us the Holy Pipe, and taught us how to use it. Because of the attacks on our Indian “Women of Power” by missionaries & other Europeans, Indian womens’ history has been buried for most of the last 512 years, to protect us. Today, the Women of Power have begun to come out of hiding. It makes many of our People very nervous, especially our men and our Elders, because they don’t want us to die at the hands of bigots again. In order to save our Traditional Ways and keep them alive, we must stand up, however. The Power of the Traditions has always rested in its women. As a grandmother and as a Sun Dancer, I have a responsibility to stand strongly on this matter. Mdewakantonan means “People who live by the spirit water”; Wakhpekute means “People who shoot through the leaves”. Thus, I come from People who lived in the woods and marshes of the North Country where we Santee originally come from, before relocation was forced on us in the 1800’s. Hecetu he. (HEHchehtoo yeh.) That is all I have to say at this time. Pilamiya ye. (PeeLAHmeeyah yeh) Thank you. |
